Comparison of the Netherlands and Nigeria

In every aspect both countries are very different. The differences start with the fact that the Netherlands is a developed country while Nigeria is a developing country. According to the textbook - Introduction to Environmental Science, this is because the Netherlands is stable and industrialized - giving it the title of a developed country. While Nigeria is a poor country and is rapidly growing - giving it the title of a developing country (Muliti,S). Both countries demographics are considerably different. Starting with the Netherlands having a birth rate of 10 per 1,000 people- which is considerably low, only 10 infants are born for every 1,000 people. This is because when a country is developed, majority of individuals have access to sex education and many forms of birth control. This means less people are having children, causing a low birth rate. The Netherlands death rate is very close to its birth rate at 9 per 1,000 people. This is a close to even birth to death ratio. Enough people are being born to compensate for those that are dying. With that being said, the fertility rate of the Netherlands is very low being at a 1.6 rate. What this can do is decrease the population in an area. The population growth of the Netherlands is .1%. All this information being considered shows that the Netherlands is sustaining their population, but not growing it. Nigeria is on the opposite scale of almost everything compared to the Netherlands. Nigeria has very high birth rate of 39 per 1,000 people, 39 infants are born for every 1,000 people. This is because a developing country's majority of citizens do not have access to an educational system like sex education and don't have access to most forms of birth control. While both countries death rate is fairly similar, they have a very different impact. Nigeria's death rate is 12 per 1,000 people. This means far many more people are being born than those dying. Their fertility rate is at a 5.5. This means the country is rapidly growing. This causes their high population growth rate being 26 times higher than the Netherlands at 2.6%. Gross national income is also very different between these two countries. The Netherlands gross national income is $52,640, while Nigeria is $5,680. This huge gap is due to their developments as a country. The Netherlands is developed and stable, while Nigeria is not. I believe this also plays a big role in their life expectancy for males and females. For the Netherlands the male life expectancy is 80, and 83 years old for females. While the Nigeria’s life expectancy is almost half of the Netherlands; Males life expectancy is 53, and 54 years old for females.

Comparison of the Netherlands and Nigeria and the World

Now we will compare these two countries to the rest of the world. According to Population Reference Bureau – World Population Data Sheet listed next will be the Worlds global average of demographics (Population Reference Bureau). The world has a birth rate of 19 per a 1,000 – Netherlands is 10 per a 1,000, Nigeria’s is 39 per 1,000. The Netherlands is fairly lower compared to the world average and Nigeria is fairly higher than the world average. The death rate for the world is 7 per a 1,000 – the Netherlands is 9 per a 1,000, Nigeria’s is 12 per 1,000. The Netherlands is only a small difference while Nigeria has more people dying per a 1,000 people compared to the world average. The population growth rate for the world is 1.2% - the Netherlands is .1%, Nigeria’s is 2.6%. All three are very different but correlate with each countries birth and death rate. The fertility rate for the world is 2.4 – the Netherlands is 1.6, Nigeria’s is 5.5. This means that the Netherlands has less women are having births over time than the collective average of the world and Nigeria has many women having births over time. The rest of the worlds collective average is not growing at a rapid rate, but the Netherlands is growing at less of a rate in comparison; they are almost not growing at all. While Nigeria is rapidly increasing in population. The worlds gross national income is $16,927 while the Netherlands is considerably higher being at $52,640, and Nigeria being much lower at $5,680. The life expectancy for the world is 70 for males and 74 for females – the Netherlands is 80 for males and 83 for females, Nigeria’s is 53 for males and 54 for females. The average of the world falls under the less developed category, Netherlands more developed and Nigeria falling under the least developed category. The Netherlands in comparison to the world average is only off in a few areas while Nigeria is far less developed and compares very differently.
